After watching Big Little Lies on HBO, I knew I needed to read something by this author. I had read an article that the rights were purchased to this book by Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, and I had to read it. The following is my personal opinion on the book and a few key takeaways from our book club discussion.
Synopsis
This book follows the story of two friends, Clementine and Erika. These women have been friends from childhood and while they’re completely different they’ve remained friends. The story goes between the present and past, with the focus on one night that changed everything.
Review
It was incredibly well written, but I was slightly disappointed. I think I was expecting something more sinister than what was presented. The characters were really well developed and I did clearly hear Reese and Nicole’s voices through the characters. The characters had their own traumas and I was more interested in their lives than in the incident.
Overall, I’d give this book a 6 out of 10. There was a lot of build up for something disappointing.
Book Club
The book club discussion was limited and everyone had the same feeling about the book. I do recommend that you read this for your book club and here are some discussion items that may be helpful:
- How would you react to the incident?
- What did you think of the dynamic of their friendship?
- What are your thoughts on the party?
- Could you relate to the characters?
Add some wine and I think you’ll find more discussion points.
Happy reading.
