How and Why to Start a Book Club

I know I’m not alone when I say that 2020 left me missing human connection. Especially with strong, like-minded females. And I also fall back in love with reading.

How to Start

Starting a book club is actually really easy! I wasn’t sure if anyone would be interested, but I put a post out on Facebook. It turns out – I wasn’t the only one. The interest was huge, so I started a group. The rules of engagement were easy: if the book interests you, you can read and join that months session.

Books

A key piece of a book club is the book selection. This is definitely the most difficult part. I’ve spent a lot of time researching books and reading reviews. Some books were far more successful than others and I highly recommend making a list and a plan. I have my list assigned by months with a variety of themes. I’ve already selected multiple books in a variety of genres.

If you need help getting started, here are some resources:

Party

Due to Covid, the first few sessions were remote but we were able to start having in person sessions outside recently. Combining food, drinks, and a great discussion make for a great party. For our first party, I created an epic charcuterie board and made my strawberry sangria.

It wouldn’t be an xo love Kim party without a party favor. Using these acrylic Christmas ornaments, I painted each of the girl’s names to serve as a bookmark. It took a total of 5 minutes and everyone was thrilled.

Discussion

I recommend preparing some discussion points ahead of the party. Most books have a few discussion topics at the end of the book, and I’ve provided a few down below.

  • Did you relate to the character?
  • What surprised you?
  • Was there anything that stayed with you?
  • Were you _____ about this?

Book Clubs

Staring a book club has been a great experience and I’m building new friendships. It’s been a great experience and I look forward to my next party. I highly recommend starting your own.

Happy reading!
